BattleBot Weight Classes

In the world of BattleBots robot fighting the people who design their robots put them in different weight classes. This is done with the intention of keeping a level of fairness in competition and to avoid having robots fight ones that are significantly smaller. Here' s a look at the BattleBot weight classes used in competition.

The smallest size of robots that can be used for robot fighting here is in the lightweight class. Lightweight robots are smaller in that they have smaller engines and fewer materials with which to fight with. The limit that a lightweight robot can be at is sixty pounds or twenty seven kilograms. These robots are generally powered by batteries. Also, with the small sizes of the robots here the weapons that are used are not as strong as that of other robots in the world of BattleBots.

Next is the middleweight class. The robots here are a maximum of 120 pounds or fifty four kilograms. Most of these robots are also battery powered. Also, they will have weapons that are slightly stronger.

The heavyweight class is the third class for robot fighting in the BattleBots universe. These robots can be at a maximum of 220 pounds or 100kg. These robots are noted for having more complex forms of weapons than other robots in smaller weight classes. However, they are still battery powered just like with the other small classes.

The largest size that a robot can be in this competition is a super heavyweight. A super heavyweight robot is 340 pounds or 154kg in weight. There are fewer robots in this class than there are for other classes because of the great amount of work that is needed in building these robots and in many cases getting sponsorships from companies for these robots. Batteries are used for powering these robots. Some use gasoline, but this has been a practice that has been going out of style in recent years.

One of the most important parts of the BattleBots in terms of weights involves weight specifications for walking robots. A walking robot, which is better known as a “StompBot,” is one that moves around in methods other than that of wheels. A twenty percent weight bonus is allowed to these types of robots. However, there are some especially strict guidelines for building a StompBot. Because of this there are hardly ever any StompBots in competition, but for these competitions the weight specifications are still going to be different.

Those are the four different BattleBot weight classes. These classes are all made to help with keeping with a better level of competition. After all, it would not be all that fun to watch a 300 pound robot beat up on an eight pound one, right?
